My work is inspired by people who make their living on the water and investigates the cultural shifts of small fishing communities. It is a culmination of years of anthropological research that began in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Canada, and has taken me to both coasts of the United States, among other sites. The research assists me in understanding particular aspects of cultural behavior, and I might take on that persona, if possible, through the work. As the story lines evolve, I end up connecting them to my own life, using the art as a translative metaphor for human experience.
The work acts as a buoy that might navigate viewers from all walks of life into thinking about the changing nature of culture in their own communities, and how this change can affect a deep sense of home and place.
